Psychology & Psychotherapy

Existential Atelier: New Horizon

A place where professional horizons widen: seminars and courses, groups that do their work by being a group, and psychotherapy for the moments when life has begun to come apart at the seams.

How we work

Three formats, often taken together. All of them assume you are here to practise something rather than to be lectured at.

Seminars and courses

A place where professional horizons widen and competence grows.

Teaching seminars, structured courses, self-exploration groups, shared discussion — all of it becomes living ground for development, inspiration and work of one's own.

Real learning is a road that does not end, and we walk it together. We take up the sharpest and the most ordinary questions daily life raises, which are often the same questions.

Self-exploration groups

Working on your own material, in company.

Open groups for practitioners and for anyone doing serious personal work. The group is the instrument: what is hard to see alone becomes visible when it is said aloud to people doing the same thing.

Practical sessions

Turning method into something you can actually do.

For people who want more awareness and more fullness in an ordinary day, who are open to being surprised by what they find, and who want support on the way there.

Sessions model fragments of real professional work as teaching situations. Solving them is how theory becomes a practical skill and how psychological knowledge starts being useful rather than merely known.

When it is time to come

Hurt, fear, uncertainty, exhaustion; when it is hard to talk to the people closest to you, or simply to be yourself — life begins to come apart at the seams. We quarrel, we drift from one another, we lose relationships, children, work, possibilities. All the things that might have held and sustained us.

Psychotherapy is what comes to help at moments like these. The work is deep and it is alive, and it gives a person back their composure, their steadiness and their belief in themselves. It sees the whole person — all their pain, all their strength, everything they still have to work with — and it walks alongside, step by step.

The image of the human being

Existential analysis does not treat a person as one flat thing. It describes a many-levelled unity in which each level interacts with the others to make one experience of being, and understanding those levels is how the depth of a human life, and what is possible in it, come into view.

I

Somatic

Body, instinct, biological need

The body, the instincts, the needs a living thing cannot argue with. It is the ground everything else rests on, and the easiest level to discount right up until it stops cooperating.

II

Psychological

Emotion, temperament, character

Feeling, mood, temperament, character, the traits a person recognises as their own. Animals have this level too, though it takes a more complicated form in us.

III

Spiritual

Freedom, responsibility, meaning

Not reducible to either level beneath it. This is where freedom, responsibility, conscience and the search for meaning and values come from — and where a person becomes able to step past their own self toward something larger than themselves.

The professional community

A space for exchanging experience, for live conversation, and for going further into existential psychology than a working day allows. Everyone brings their own reading of the work, their own experience, their own view.

The community is open. There are colleagues here from different directions and different schools, and that range is exactly what makes it worth being in — what one tradition takes for granted, another has spent years questioning. We support one another, and new projects, ideas and partnerships have come out of these conversations more than once.
